An interesting fact about multiple sclerosis is that it is most commonly found in Canada per capita. Why is it? Nobody knows for certain. Another interesting fact is that you are more likely to get the disease if you are a woman between the ages of 20 – 50. It is also more common in European descent people.
Nobody really knows why this is happening. In fact, in the first place they don’t even know what causes MS. It could be the destruction of the immune system, it could be a failure of the myelin producing cells, it could be environmental and it could be genetic. It could also be a combination of things, of course, and the cause is very likely to differ from one person to the next.
What they do know is that MS is a demyelinating disease that damages the nerve cell covers in the brain and spinal cord. What this means is that parts of the central nervous system can not communicate as they should, leading to problems of all kinds. Sufferers can have double vision, be blind in one eye, have muscle weakness, problems with coordination, sensation problems, and many other things. Fatigue, cognitive impairment, pain, incontinence, anxiety, depression, ataxia, and spasms may also be present in the disease and may differ in severity and length from patient to patient.
Although there is still no cure for multiple sclerosis, researchers are working to untangle their mysteries every day. It is the most common immune-mediated disorder that affects the central nervous system, and some doctors believe that physical therapy can help to lessen some of the symptoms ‘ effects. There are, of course, drugs and regimes that people can follow to also lessen the symptoms when a flare-up occurs.
While little is known about multiple sclerosis, we do know that the life expectancy of someone who has been diagnosed with it is only 5-10 years shorter than the average of all things considered good news. If you’ve been diagnosed with MS, you’re not alone and you can be sure there are teams of people around the world trying to find a cure. Until then, finding a doctor you can work with and a therapy that will work for you to fight this disease is imperative.
